With the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket, India stands at a historic crossroads. The need for a strong, future-ready Test captain is more urgent than ever. Former head coach Ravi Shastri has now shared his thoughts, urging selectors to look beyond experience and focus on long-term leadership potential.
In a recent conversation with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review, Shastri emphasized the importance of planning for the next decade. He urged the selectors not to hand over the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah, despite him being an obvious choice, due to the physical strain it might place on India’s pace spearhead.
Why Not Bumrah? Shastri’s Candid Concern
Shastri explained, “Jasprit would have been the obvious choice after Australia, but I don’t want Jasprit to be made captain and then you lose him as a bowler.”
Bumrah recently returned from a serious back injury that kept him out for nearly three months, including India’s winning campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Shastri highlighted the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload—especially as he transitions back into longer formats like Tests where he’ll need to bowl 10 to 15 overs a day.
Enter the Future: Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant
Instead of overburdening Bumrah, Shastri pitched two dynamic young cricketers as India’s best bets for the Test captaincy: Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.
“You groom somebody. Shubman’s looked very good. Give him the opportunity. He’s 25, 26 years of age. Even give him time,” Shastri said.
Gill, the current No.1 ranked ODI batter, has already captained India in T20Is and led his IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans. His maturity, calmness, and natural leadership qualities make him a strong candidate. He was also vice-captain of the ODI squad and led India to a 4-1 T20I series win over Zimbabwe, scoring 170 runs in 5 matches.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant brings a different kind of energy. Bold, fearless, and already proven in tough overseas tours like Australia, Pant has also captained Delhi Capitals in the IPL. His on-field charisma and game awareness have earned him a fan following that sees him as a natural leader.
“They’ve got experience as captains, now, captaining their franchise and that makes a difference,” said Shastri.
Addressing the Overseas Runs Debate
Critics have pointed out Shubman Gill’s lack of big scores overseas, but Shastri firmly dismissed such doubts.
“Sometimes I tell them, go and see your own record, how much have you done overseas? Let him play. Let him get a run overseas, then he’ll score runs. He’s a class player.”
India needs to think beyond immediate statistics and nurture leadership for the next era. Gill and Pant, both in their mid-20s, have the temperament, experience, and time to evolve into great captains.
A Changing Landscape in Indian Cricket
With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from red-ball cricket, India needs a fresh face who can anchor the team in the next phase. According to Shastri, both Gill and Pant offer that promise.
While selectors deliberate, fans and analysts alike are buzzing about India’s new direction—not just in leadership but in team identity. Who will carry the legacy forward? Will it be the composed Gill or the fiery Pant?
